A Biodiverse Marine Habitat

Located within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Upolu Reef is a small, shallow reef system positioned 25 nm northeast of Cairns, when in low tide, a small sand cay is visible. This is one of the closest reefs out of Cairns and very popular with the smaller companies due to its great protection from weather. Turtles are common, and due to its nutrient-rich currents, every trip our passengers will see great marine biodiversity.

This reef is mostly dominated by soft corals, particularly small sea fans, sea whips, and small bushy hard corals, which thrive in the moderate current flows. The reef flats are fairly shallow, providing good protection from strong winds, and the boat has its mooring located in a small semi-circle lagoon which provides easy access to the coral from the stern of the boat.

Green turtles and hawksbill turtles, are frequently observed grazing among the seagrass beds and coral outcrops. The reef’s proximity to deeper pelagic zones also attracts species such as trevally, barracuda, and reef sharks, which use the reef as a feeding and breeding ground.
