Where Coral Meets Conservation

Located 24 nautical miles east of Cairns, Thetford Reef is a stunning and diverse reef system, offering a mix of curved coral walls and many scattered bommies, perfect for snorkelling. Pure Snorkelling has exclusive access to two moorings, each offering safe and exciting snorkelling opportunities.

Plantation Reef is our first mooring site and home to a coral nurture SMART reef, where scientific coral nurseries are monitored in partnership with several Australian universities. This diverse section of the Great Barrier Reef showcases a variety of hard and soft corals growing among colourful coral bommies.

As a research-focused snorkel site, Plantation Reef offers guests the opportunity to explore a vibrant reef ecosystem while learning about coral restoration and conservation initiatives. Located close to the stern of the vessel, the site provides easy water access for snorkellers of all experience levels. Its sheltered position also makes it a popular choice in moderate wind conditions, providing comfortable snorkelling conditions for our guests.

East Meets West is our second reef location, situated on the southern tip of Thetford Reef. Well protected from the summer northerly winds, this site features spectacular wall snorkelling along an impressive 18-metre drop-off.

The reef’s unique topography provides habitat for a diverse range of marine life, including turtles, reef sharks, pelagic species, and colourful tropical reef fish. Combining dramatic reef structures with thriving coral communities, East Meets West offers a memorable Great Barrier Reef snorkelling experience for guests looking to explore one of Thetford Reef’s most distinctive sites.

Come explore one of our favourite reef sites, a crew favourite, and no crowds. Just pure snorkelling.
