Cairns: Reef, Rainforest, and Culture

Welcome to Cairns, the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and the gateway to some of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. At Pure Snorkelling, we love calling this tropical paradise home, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Cairns is more than just a departure point; it is a place where two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest collide in a breathtaking display of nature.

Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef

Tropical North Queensland is the only place on Earth where two World Heritage listed sites exist side by side. To the east lies the vibrant coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef, and to the north, the ancient Daintree Rainforest.

  • The Daintree: Estimated to be over 180 million years old, the Daintree is the world’s oldest living tropical rainforest, tens of millions of years older than the Amazon. It is a living museum filled with prehistoric plants and rare wildlife like the Southern Cassowary.

  • Cape Tribulation: This is the iconic spot where the lush green canopy literally high fives the reef. It is a rare opportunity to stand on the sand where the ancient forest meets the shore, and the world class reef begins its vast stretch across the horizon.

A Living Culture

We are proudly operating in Gimuy (Cairns) on Yirrganydji & Gunggandji land and sea country. For tens of thousands of years, Indigenous Australians have lived in harmony with this environment, and their culture remains a vital, living part of the region today. Experience ancient wisdom just north of Cairns, you can join the Kuku Yalanji people for a Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk through Mossman Gorge.
